Ottawa, ON – Nanometrics, a global leader in passive seismic instrumentation and services for industry, and K.U.M. Umwelt- und Meerestechnik Kiel GmbH, a leader in offshore engineering, acquisition and deployment, today announced a strategic partnership to offer the first truly turnkey passive seismic monitoring solution for offshore oil & gas and carbon capture and storage (CCS) operations.

This collaboration leverages Nanometrics’ instrumentation and experience providing turnkey services in the fields of oil & gas, mining, geothermal, critical infrastructure and CCS, combined with K.U.M.’s decades of leadership in offshore engineering and deployment of ocean bottom sensing technologies. By combining their strengths, Nanometrics and K.U.M. provide scalable, proven and reliable passive seismic monitoring solutions throughout the lifecycle of offshore projects, including critical CCS initiatives.

Data will be processed through Nanometrics’ advanced 24/7 data center, using the Nanometrics 8th Generation AI Analyst algorithms, ensuring accurate and complete high resolution data, a capability trusted by industry customers and regulators worldwide.

“This partnership with K.U.M. marks a significant step forward for the offshore energy and CCS industries,” said Dario Baturan, Vice President and General Manager, Seismic Monitoring Services, Nanometrics. “By combining our expertise, we are delivering a comprehensive, turnkey solution that provides the critical data and actionable insights our customers need to operate safely, efficiently, responsibly and in full regulatory compliance.”

Onno Bliss, Chief Executive Officer, K.U.M. added, “Combining our offshore deployment capabilities with Nanometrics’ leading seismic technology and data processing expertise creates a powerful synergy. Together, we will provide scalable and reliable monitoring solutions that address the unique challenges of offshore environments.”

Customers will benefit from the support of a dedicated team of experts from both Nanometrics and K.U.M. throughout their project lifecycle, from initial planning and deployment to data analysis and interpretation.

The partnership will provide turnkey end-to-end advanced data collection and processing for baseline seismicity surveys. Data is collected by K.U.M.’s NAMMU ocean bottom deployment vehicles utilizing Nanometrics’ best in class ocean bottom seismometers. Nanometrics will further contribute its industry-leading expertise in seismic data processing and analysis to these vital studies. Baseline surveys are done pre-injection to characterize background seismicity levels before introducing new activity such as carbon storage or oil and gas operations. Future phases of monitoring then identify changes to the baseline seismicity levels enabling operators to understand and manage seismic risk, comply with regulations, and ensure safe operations.

Under the terms of the new partnership, Nanometrics and KUM’s turnkey offering will be able to be used by projects around the world including Europe, Asia, Australia, South America and North America to provide comprehensive monitoring for CCS and other offshore operations.
